If you’re wondering…this page was very much on purpose and scripted the way it’s drawn. We took a lot of flack in Fallen Justice for the skimpy outfits Kerri was wearing on occasion so I figured why not play with that just a little? It’s not like she can’t still be sexy as a mom, right? That’s one of the things we LOVE about her is she’s sexy! So here you go, the gratuitous panty scene!
In all seriousness this page is probably one of my favorites out of the first issue. We’ve got some great dialog going on with her mother on the phone and this marks the first time we’ve seen her actually interacting with her mom. Fans of Fallen Justice will remember she referred to her mother in that series, but we aren’t told much about her. Here we get plenty. Kerri definitely has mom issues by the way the conversation goes and her mom has some serious Tonya issues! It seems like they might have had this discussion once or twice before, huh? Tonya seems to take it more or less in stride, but the last panel speaks volumes about how she really feels. And there’s that damn cat again!
And here we have a fairly major character reveal, in that Tonya is in fact a lesbian. Does it matter in the grand scheme of things? Absolutely. Tonya is who she is, and she sees the world the way she does because of the person she has grown into over the course of her life. To ignore or downplay her sexuality would be to rob her character of something vital. I’m not what anyone would call shy, so I don’t sugarcoat things much, and the book will be no different. In Fallen Justice we dealt with a lot of pretty touchy things in terms of ethics and the general morality of heroes. With Dynagirl we’ll be dealing with some of the same themes and a whole lot more along the way. Just trust me when I tell you that Tonya won’t be the type of lesbian that’s only used for stereotypical or gratuitous type scenes. She’s a tough nut to crack but we’ll get there.
