I love how fast the volcano reacts here, and showing things taking place from this end is pretty cool I think. We initially just jumped right into a battle royal I think, but after looking at it a bit we felt like a smoother transition was in order, thus a little bit back in the cave action.

Oh, and I got to flex my clipping mask skills again here. I do that from time to time just for fun, because I think it looks completely bad ass, and while it takes forever to make it look right, the end result is always worth it.

So here we go folks! Standard inside front cover action. Nietzsche has always been a fascinating guy to me personally, and I think this quote makes a lot of sense. You see warriors fall into this sort of trap all the time. You spend so much time fighting a war, you not only forget what you’re fighting for, but you suddenly become the thing you started fighting. That might pertain to our heroine…here soon.

Bam! Issue #10 in the house! We’ve got a couple of variants on the same cover, one with a darker lava, one with some different background action going, but this one seemed to be the coolest over all of them, so that’s where we went.

So what the hell happened to Dynagirl?! I think way back when we got started with this arc I might have mentioned we were about to put her through the wringer and see what she’d end up like on the other side. While she’s definitely changed at this point, we’re just getting started with how screwed up her life’s about to get. The new powers are going to be a wild ride, no doubt about it, but that’s just scratching the surface. Gonna be fun!

Huge props to both Harold and SPLASH on this cover. It’s definitely tied with the cover to issue #7 as my favorite, and at least right now, I think this one is winning by a nose.

And you know…I’d sure hate to be at the other end of whatever she’s headed towards! She kinda looks upset.

So having said all that, I figured I’d show you an artist at work. I’ve made no secret of my deep love for Harold’s work over the years we’ve been teamed up. I think we work well together, but even if we weren’t I’d follow everything the guy put onto paper because it’s his energy, the life he brings to the work, that jumps out at me. Observe…

That’s a panel out of page 6 of Dynagirl #10. I know, because I got to see the whole page a week or so ago, and it’s unbelievable. I mean what he’s got right here kicks all sorts of ass no doubt, but when you see this piece within the context of the entire page…mind blowing. What makes it all the more impressive is that Harold sent me the page, and several others because he wanted to let me know that he was taking a bit longer on the new pages as he adjusted his style a bit, tried some new things to make the book better. Even a casual fan could see the evolution of his style from Fallen Justice and the constraints he was under at the time to the breakout stuff he’s done on Dynagirl, and even further from the first arc to the second. It’s a massive difference, and all to the better, in my opinion.

See, that’s where I come down on the whole drawing/artist thing. Someone who can draw, could even draw well and make a nice living doing it. Can’t spite anyone their livelihood. But an artist isn’t happy with just drawing. An artist is constantly upping their game, pushing their comfort zone, trying new techniques to get better, to improve. I think that’s the critical difference that sets the two apart. And without a doubt, Harold Edge is an artist.

So there you have it. Not exactly a special Thursday page, but a nice little update showing you some behind the scenes process at least. I’ll be posting more of these, as time and material allow. Let me know what you think!

Oops. That thing is NASTY! She’s gotta fight that thing? Yikes! I hope we have some back-up characters waiting in the wings!

To be honest, we changed the last three pages at the 11th hour. Originally, these pages had a much different feel. I could go into a huge detail, and cover why we made the changes, but in the end I’m very happy with the route we took. Sometimes it’s the right time to go a little crazy and push the envelope a little bit, and other times it’s better to hew closer to the hedge and stay the course. In these pages, we’ve accomplished every bit of what we set out to do in the original script and then some, while staying away from elements we really didn’t need to put in there in the first place. In the end I think we served the story better going this route.

All that being said, what a fun page! And we finally see the spirit of the volcano! I, for one, think the wait was well worth it! And just so you know, the crazy voice of the spirit was a complete pain in the ass!

From here on out, it’s really almost impossible to pick a favorite page, because as you’ll see very shortly, they’re all just freaking incredible. Having said that, I’ve loved this page since I first set eyes on it, and I think it’s one of the most powerful single pages that Harold has ever drawn. The drastic scene changes, the zooms…and those last two panels…woo! The emotion alone just kills it.

Oh, and yeah, I did directly reference Lord of the Rings in the script. I said something along the lines of “She’s standing on a bridge out over the huge lava river, picture Gandolf as he faced the Balrog.” So with that in mind, I kinda had to toss in the reference. Kerri digs sci-fi and fantasy fiction. Believe it. She hates Dr. Who though.
